I’m John Rudd, an independent joiner based at Flowers Hill in Brislington, working across Bath and the wider West of England. I learned this trade the traditional way, marking out and cutting joints by hand long before I relied on machinery, and that grounding still shapes how I approach every commission. As a sole trader, I handle every stage of a custom woodwork project myself – design, assembly, fitting and furniture restoration, should it be needed – with no subcontractors involved at any point. Clients get direct access to me throughout, which means fewer misunderstandings, clearer timescales, and a finished piece that matches exactly what was agreed.

Working mainly in oak, ash, and walnut sourced from British sawmills, I choose timber for its grain, stability, and how it will age in a home rather than for the lowest price. Sourcing closer to home also means shorter lead times and less waste, since I can select boards in person rather than ordering blind from a catalogue. Every piece of bespoke furniture I build starts as a rough sketch on paper, developed with the client until the proportions, joints, and finish are right, then cut and assembled by hand in my Brislington workshop. This includes fitted wardrobes and dedicated timber storage for workshops or garages.

Reliability matters as much as the finished result. I turn up when I say I will, give realistic timeframes at the outset, and keep clients updated if a project’s scope changes. Because I don’t rely on subcontractors, there’s no handing work off to someone I’ve never met: the person who quotes the job is the person cutting the timber and fitting it in your home. I also take on general carpentry alongside larger commissions, repairing an existing staircase or fitting a new door, so smaller jobs get the same level of attention as a full kitchen. This kind of carpentry rewards patience over speed. Most clients come back for a second or third project, which says more about consistency than anything else.
